Extrinsic and Intrinsic Factors Determine Expression Levels of Gap Junction-Forming Connexins in the Mammalian Retina

چکیده

Gap junctions (GJs) are not static bridges; instead, GJs as well the molecular building block connexin (Cx) proteins undergo major expression changes in degenerating retinal tissue. Various progressive diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, age-related degeneration, etc., affect neurons of retina and thus their neuronal connections endure irreversible well. Although Cx might be hallmarks tissue deterioration, bridges such they adaptive even healthy to respond ever-changing environment. It is, therefore, imperative determine these latter GJ functionality morphology makeup identify distinguish them from alterations following deterioration. In this review, we summarize that take place occur on three different time scales: throughout entire lifespan, during daily a result quick light adaptation.

Aberrant expression pattern of gap junction connexins in endometriotic tissues.

The expression of gap junction connexins (Cx) in the female reproductive tract of rodents and in the human endometrium is highly regulated by steroid hormones. Here we have investigated the distribution and regulation properties of Cx43, Cx26 and Cx32 in the human ectopic endometrium of 41 patients, using immunohistochemistry. The biopsies were obtained during the early or late follicular phase...

Expression and function of the neuronal gap junction protein connexin 36 in developing mammalian retina.

With the advent of transgenic mice, much has been learned about the expression and function of gap junctions. Previously, we reported that retinal ganglion cells in mice lacking the neuronal gap junction protein connexin 36 (Cx36) have nearly normal firing patterns at postnatal day 4 (P4) but many more asynchronous action potentials than wild-type mice at P10 (Torborg et al. [2005] Nat. Neurosc...

Membrane insertion of gap junction connexins: polytopic channel forming membrane proteins

Connexins, the proteins that form gap junction channels, are polytopic plasma membrane (PM) proteins that traverse the plasma membrane bilayer four times. The insertion of five different connexins into the membrane of the ER was studied by synthesizing connexins in translation-competent cell lysates supplemented with pancreatic ER-derived microsomes, and by expressing connexins in vivo in sever...
